October 4, 2013 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We had quite a busy week creating pet houses and 3 dimensional cats.  We introduced our pet theme with a discussion about different needs of pets versus human beings.  Some of the similarities that the children came up with were:  Animals and people both need food, water, sunshine, exercise and friends.  The differences were:  dogs bark, cats meow and people talk and sing. The children created pet houses by painting coffee boxes, adding animal stickers and decorating the roofs with various colorful materials. They also chose a rug to go inside.  The animals looked adorable in their new  homes.  The children also traced and cut out three dimensional cats.  They glued on various shaped foam pieces such as eyes, nose and mouths and added whiskers.

The children did a great job sitting and listening to animal stories.  Some of their favorites were:  Old MacDonald, by Jane Cabrera.  Harry the Dirty Dog, by Gene Zion, and Where's Spot? by Eric :  Hill.  They also learned some new animal songs - "Bingo" and "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."

This week in music class with Lisa, the children walked, tip-toed, and ran to the beat of a drum.  They pretended to be riding bicycles up to a mountain where they saw birds, bunnies, and bees!  They also played the bells and marched around the room.

We concluded our week by doing a science experiment.  We made "Penny Washing Machines."   We used four different bowls - one with salt, one with vinegar, one with salt and vinegar, and one with salt and water.  After adding the solutions to the bowls, the children made predictions as to what solutions would do the best job cleaning the pennies.  We then waited five minutes  to see the changes in the color of the pennies.  Ask your child which solution cleaned the pennies the best.

Love,

Ms. Bonne and
Ms. Barbara

Notes:

Please send your child with a sweater or jacket even if it seems warm.  It tends to be colder out on the playground.

Please try to have your child at school on time.  We start meeting at 9:15, which is a very important part of our day.
